Among the best gamepads in the current generation of consoles is Sony's PlayStation 4's DualShock 4 control. The fantastic news: Owners of a DS4 controller can use it to get almost all gamepad-ready Windows games. The bad: Unlike Microsoft's Xbox One gamepads, preparing the PS4 controller onto a PC takes somewhat more effort, at least when it comes to wireless usage. But don't worry, we'll demonstrate how you can play your favourite games using all the PlayStation controller. Incidentally, this also works with both the older DualShock 4 control and the revised version released in 2016 using the PlayStation 4 Guru.

Probably the simplest choice to use the DualShock 4 controller on the PC is the use of a conventional USB cable. Not only can the DualShock 4 controller be charged through the micro USB port, but it can also be connected to the PC like any other USB device. Windows 10 admits the gamepad within a couple of seconds and you are able to use it. Especially in newer games or at the Big-Picture interface of Steam, now you can use the PS4 controller instantly. However, in many cases, you want an extra setup using a tool such as DS4Windows - more on this below.

Whether through cable or Bluetooth: You will find that the use of this PS4 control on the PC in many games is not possible or just faulty. The rationale: Microsoft uses the Xinput port on Windows to join game controllers. Most games, therefore, call for a Xinput-compatible Gamecotnroller, like the Xbox One or Xbox 360 gamepads. Sony officially doesn't encourage Xinput, which is the reason why the PS4 controller is not recognized by games like FIFA 19. That doesn't make a difference! Several programs jump into the breach. Probably the best is that the free program DS4Windows, The open source application trickles Windows into believing that the connected PS4 controller is an Xbox gamepad. This works with both the wired and the Bluetooth variant. In practice, this means you could control almost all controller-compatible Windows games with the DualShock 4 control.
